Binary oppostions

So my teacher asked me. "How are binary oppositions established at the beginning of a teen movie?"  I can't just say "I don't know", go home and procrastinate... well I can at the expense of my grade so I better write something.

Well first of all binary oppositions and everything else is always established with, well what is happening on screen. This means inevitably they will fall into four categories: Mise en Scene, Editing, Camera and Sound. I guess the next best thing as to writing an essay on how this works would be a example so here you are: a random teen film intro, that I have not seen.

Jennifer's Body

Now for the analysing bit. Here are the 4 categories again with what I have noticed and what it shows.

  • Mise En Scene The pink bedroom shows the movie is going to be a chick flick with a sweet innocent girl but..
  • Sound: the girl is evil as the music in the background slowly builds up into chromatics, implying she is evil and builds tension.
  • Camera: The slow zooming at the beginning implies the movie will be calm and relaxed  BUT...
  • Editing: The sudden jump cuts imply something bad is already happening.
