The Social Network

The Social Network

The storyline set up in the opening scene includes Jesse Eisenberg ( Mark Zuckerberg) and Rooney Mara ( Erica Albright ).  Mark is a intelligent computer scientist which also is an anti-social. He's out on a date with Erica which leads being honest to a bad end. Therefore, Mark reveals his true colours in which Erica believes he's an "asshole" and leads to the couple breaking up.

Binary oppositions

  • Mark is a cold hearted character, whereas, Erica seems to be a more socialised as she states the 'door-man' is a good class friend of hers.  As a result we identify her as a warm hearted character.
  • Mark thinks more of himself than he already is. Whereas, Erica is a normal/average college student.
  • Mark is exposed as being a more of a gossip guy as he claims Erica slept with the door guy. However, Erica denies it, leaving her to be a 'brush' Character.

Binary oppositions are set through 4 technical areas which are Mise en scene, Editing, Sound and Camera.

  1. Mise en scene: Lighting -  half of each characters face is lighted up which seems to be coming from, possibly, a window. Its within a pub setting in which Mark seems to be normal and warmhearted to the environment, however, Erica talks about him being a VIP. Within speech, Mark is revealed as being cold and Erica pretty aggressive due to Marks statements.
  2. Editing: once in a argument, the editing speeds up although some parts were slow as its a dialogue between the two. To use such editing, gives the scene more of a tense approach.
  3. Sound; calm environment, not much sound regardless of it being in a pub setting. However, as tension increases, the voice of the two raise too.
  4. Camera:Mid close-up on both of the characters. The continuous use of shot reverse shot reveals that theres dolour between the two. Close up of Erica, while she whispers "You're an asshole" to end the conversation.
