Teen movie stereotypes

Within teen movies at first we are introduced to variety of characters. This may consist of the popular kid, the wannabe, the pretty ugly girl, the school weirdo, the popular girl that tends to be the mean/spoilt one, fat boy, bullied kid, a virgin, smart/nerd and an obsessed best bestfriend.

In reference to the above, while watching 'Not Another Teen Movie', i have come across and identified most of these characters. For example, The Popular Jock was exposed as he first entered the school/college car park with his red super car. As he stepped out, the use of camera revealed the cool trainers he wore. This suggest that both mise en scene and camera was used in order to give a hint to the audience that he was the popular kid. Also, as he walked down the corridor, located in the middle, he has underwear thrown at him to suggest that he was also the "ladies man". Not only is it easy to spot the popular kid in this movie but it is also in other teen movies. For instance, She's the man and other teen movies. In doing so, it may relate to most teenagers experience as there will always be that one popular kid in school that is familiar in many pupils eye.

The Wannabe of the school is seen if he/she acts in a way o wears a costume thats not relevant to him. For example, the wannabe in this movie wears a japanese headband which identifies that he's part of a karate club…although in this case he isn't. He only wears it so people assume he's a part of them, and possibly to gain reputation

The Fat Guy is usually the one who's bullied by not being able to ask out a girl, even if he done so, he is rejected. He is under peer pressure most of the time. For example, also in 21 Jump Street, Johna Hill is in the same situation as Channing Tatum is presented as being more fit that attracts more females.

The pretty ugly girl is the one where the audience assumes she is the less attractive one. In this case, this is true as she is using props such as glasses and braces. Therefore the use of mise en scene suggests she takes less care of her self. In comparison, the TV series Ugly Betty is very much similar. Once the character takes good care with beauty products etc, its as if its a totally different person.

Popular girl - usually spoilt with a rich, wealthy family background. Believes she is superior and holds the power to control absolutely any boys mind within her school or college.

The Black Guy- In this case, he is a unique character with a unique role. Making an appearance when a funny situation occurs, builds up the comedy as he states a funny comment. This sort of character tends to wear funny looking clothing that usually doesn't fit in with the environment they're in.
