Camera and editing
For practice and my teachers idea of recreation, I will analyse this clip for camera and editing. The clip is taken from Donnie Darko and it is apparently the intro but I have never seem the film. Anyway here are 5 points on the camera.
- The first thing I noticed in this clips is it's lack of edits (4 in 2 mins 37 seconds). This gives the effect of the school day a very seamless, fluid sort of motion.
- The camera does however, use a sped-up pan in as a transition from one person to the next but it does not cut more than 4 times. This panning gives the effect that main characters in this movie are demonstrating exactly what they will be like for the whole movie.
- One of the cuts is a fade to white, when the camera is following a teacher outside. This gives the effect that the school is a very positive and vibrant place.
- The slow motion used throughout most of this clip really shows the statuses of different characters. E.g when the rebel of this clip is shown the clip is slowed right down, showing how significant he is, or at least how important he thinks he is but, when the teacher in violet velvet clothing is shown afterwards, she is sped up to show her lack of power over the rebel.
- It is also used to show the business of a school day at the end of the clip where the teacher enters her classroom. The clip is sped up to show how busy she gets throughout the day.
